Armourcoat Surface Finishes were shortlisted for The International Trade Excellence in Innovation Award at this year’s International Trade Awards 2012. Now entering their fifth year, the International Trade Awards, sponsored by American Express Foreign Exchange Services, are the only UK wide business awards to exclusively recognise the excellence achieved by the UK’s leading exporters and importers. Despite the challenges posed by current global economic conditions, UK companies are still competing on the International stage and the 2012 International Trade Awards celebrates these ventures and successes. Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Lord Green, who introduced last year’s gala lunch and awards, said that "exporting is ‘not just good for Britain’, but that it is ‘essential for Britain’."

Daniel Nevitt, Group Marketing Director of Armourcoat Surface Finishes, “to be short-listed for the International Trade Awards is a huge honour, and it has been a great morale boost for staff both in the UK and internationally.  It’s given the team a boost at a time when such independent accolades really mean the world. We’ve put a lot of miles and hours into the development of our worldwide export business, so it’s great to be recognised in this way.”

This year’s awards were held at The Brewery on 10th December where a panel of industry experts, including Parveen Thornhill, Regional Director for UKTI London, Lesley Batchelor, Director General of the Institute of Export & International Trade, Allan Biggar, CEO Xperiamedia, Rocco Magno, General Manager FX IP at American Express Europe Limited and Michael Wilson, editor and entrepreneur, announced the winners.

Applicants were competing in four categories, the Small to Medium Sized Company of the Year Award, Excellence in Innovation Award, New Frontiers Award and Company of the Year Award.

"The standard was incredibly high, particularly for the main award where the judges were torn between some very impressive entries. There were some very difficult choices to make," said Rocco Magno.

"It is pleasing to see such a high standard across the board as it shows that there is real hope for the economy, and that there are a huge number of excellent businesses out there."

ASF inc. Chief Operating Officer Shawn Tweedy spoke to 'Retail Focus' magazine, in advance of
GlobalShop 2013, the largest store design and at-retail marketing show in the USA.  The event takes place April 16-18, at the McCormick Place Convention Center, Chicago, IL.

Visit Armourcoat at booth #2049.
ASF inc. COO Shawn Tweedy

Retail Focus: Armourcoat is taking a stand at GlobalShop for the first time in 2013. What products will you be exhibiting?
Shawn Tweedy: We’re really excited to be part of GlobalShop in 2013, the largest store design and at-retail marketing show in the United States. Armourcoat will be presenting a new custom-made decorative wall panel system, evolved from our renowned range of applied seamless wall finishes – ArmourFX.

Our team of specialist designers and artisan plasterers based in Las Vegas can work with clients to create integrated custom wall panel systems or design statement single artwork pieces.  We can even include corporate logos or themed colours and finish techniques.    Once finished, the panels are delivered direct from our single source workshop in custom-made foam packaging to ensure safe arrival on site.  As all modular systems, the panels can be hung and removed as required, with no specialist installation necessary.

We invite clients to visit us at the show at booth #2049, where we are demonstrating the use and application of ArmourFX in a retail setting.  We also delighted to be hosting ‘Retail Focus’ on the stand.

RF: Tell us more about the new ArmourFX.
ST: The finished ArmourFX panels are supplied pre-fitted with coloured edge banding and Z-clips to aid on-site installation.  Z-clips provide fast installation and ease of handling, and also ensure the panels are demountable for access to services behind.  The clips themselves are hidden by the secured panel with just ¼” build up between back of panel and substrate.  Finally, panels can be installed and adjusted laterally and vertically for a perfect fit.

RF: What makes it so well suited to retail environments?
ST: ArmourFX panels provide a quick and mess-free solution for a retail setting.  Often projects are under tight deadlines for completion, or it is impractical to work with ‘wet’ plastering trades on site.  ArmourFX can be highly customized to suit the client, sent directly to site and installed in a few hours.  This is perfect for a quick turn-around, perhaps for a rebranding or change in store decor.  With the use of Z-clips for mounting, panels can be removed for access to service channels or for seasonal changes.

Armourcoat are pleased to be an associate member of the Association for Retail Environments (A.R.E.) a non-profit trade association representing the US retail industry.  We look forward to working with A.R.E. and its members to develop the brand further.

Further technical information, and a gallery of images, can be seen at www.armourfx.com.

RF: What else do you plan to do/see while you're in town?
ST: Given our attendance at the GlobalShop exhibition we’ll be visiting some our recent retail projects on the ‘Magnificent Mile’ on Michigan Avenue, then Chicago’s Loop and Macy’s department store on State Street.

The interview can be read in March's issue of 'Retail Focus' available from Armourcoat booth #2049 at GlobalShop 2013.

Q&A - H&C News

Q&A session for Hospitality & Catering News.  View here.

Q – Today you are a global business, but where did it all begin?

Daniel Nevitt – Armourcoat actually started life as a manufacturer of specialist racket sports plaster over twenty-five years ago, producing the hard impact plaster back wall for racquet, squash or real tennis courts.  The company still holds an 80% global market share in these high quality products, and oversees a network of thirty agents around the world.  Whilst the racket sports plaster is now a smaller part of a much broader product portfolio, it created the basis for the exacting technical performance of our finishes we see today.

We concentrate much more now on our decorative wall finishes, with a UK contracting division and a separate network of fifty trained agents representing seventy countries.  In addition, we recently created a subsidiary company in Las Vegas to manage the North American market directly, and operate production facilities (for our pre-cast panels) in Las Vegas, Dubai, Moscow and Shenzhen in China.

Q – How do hoteliers and restaurateurs begin the process of selecting a specific finish, it looks very technical to us?

DN – The most important aspect for a good installation is correct substrate preparation.  Our finishes are generally a final decorative layer, and therefore will not disguise any bumps, flares or imperfections in the wall surface.  However, we offer expert advice and instructions to assist the specifier, and can even manage this process with our ‘AntiCrack’ fibre and resin reinforced gypsum skim-coat plaster, which resists cracking at board joints and significantly improves the impact resistance and durability of drywall construction.

Our core decorative product line is polished (often referred to as ‘Venetian’) and textured plaster finishes.  These are applied seamlessly to the wall surface with traditional plastering techniques – with a hawk and trowel.  We also have a range of high performance architectural coatings for back-of-house areas, corridors, kitchens and public areas.  In addition, we can create 3D sculptural effects – seamlessly or with an expressed joint - with pre-cast panels.

We offer a wide range of finishes and effects, and again our specification sales team can provide advice on options including large-scale samples, on-site mock-ups and custom colour matching and finishes.

Q – Where are your finishes used in a hospitality setting?

DN – Our finishes are specified throughout the interior of a project, although we generally see polished plaster and our Sculptural 3D wall system used in lobby areas, or feature walls in bars and restaurants.  We are increasingly seeing projects utilizing polished plaster in swimming pool, saunas and spa areas as the finishes are naturally breathable and resistant to mould, algae and bacteria.  Armourcoat finishes (in particular Spatulata) have been used to great effect on swimming pool ceilings to provide a seamless monolithic highly polished surface, great for light reflection and creating a spacious and opulent effect.

Q – If one hotel or restaurant in a chain works with you on a project can the finish then be achieved at other locations?

DN – Absolutely, we currently work with a number of national and international clients to achieve a ‘signature’ decorative finish.  This could be a specific colour reference (we can match to Pantone or RAL references) or finish, but increasingly we work with vinyl stencils to create raised or recessed design such as logos or brand designs to give consistency of presentation.

To give an example, we have just started production of 2,000 ‘welcome wall’ panels for Choice Hotels International in America for the Comfort Inn and Comfort Suite brands.  These are developed from our ArmourFX modular panels, which are finished in a ‘Travertine’ stone-effect, with raised logo and candle boxes for lighting.  The panels are simply hung using Z-clips, to provide fast installation and ease of handling.  The clips themselves are hidden by the secured panel with just 5mm build up between back of panel and substrate.  Finally, panels can be installed and adjusted laterally and vertically for a perfect fit.

Q – Many companies today use the sustainability tag in their marketing, can you justify your sustainability credentials?

DN – We have been very fortunate to have developed a ‘green’ product from the outset.  Our core products lines include Italian pre-consumer recycled marble, using the off-cuts from the slab industry.  Rather than heading to landfill, we refine and grade, and use within our plaster recipes – up to 60% depending on the product.  Each year we recycle close to 250 tonnes of marble.  The products have low or zero VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and are zero fire rated.

When considering lifetime costs, Armourcoat finishes are extremely tough and durable.  With the right preparation, the finish should last the life of the building - important when reviewing the cost of repainting or redecorating programmes.  Our technical documents provide a wide range of test data to compare against other decorative products for surface hardness and scrub resistance.

Q – As a pretty unique business where do you recruit your workforce from and/or is there a training programme needed?

DN – This is an artisan craft, and is perfected over many years.  In the UK, we have a small team of highly skilled trainers who impart their knowledge and oversee our contract projects.  The same team travel the world to work with our international agents on training and on local projects requiring specialist application skills.  We also operate an apprenticeship scheme, taking individuals with limited plastering skills but with the right mindset and attitude, to join the training team.

Q – What new product developments are you looking at in the near future?

DN – Company founder and Creative Director Duncan MacKellar is the driving force of the Armourcoat business, and is fundamental to the introduction of new products.  At the moment, we are close to launch of new plaster finishes and a new external render.  We’ll also be developing our use of Lafarge Ductal Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) for some novel applications.

London-based design resource studio Material Lab is going back to basics at Surface Design 2013 by making the latest products and innovations the centrepiece of their show.

Based at The Business Design Centre in London, the 2013 Surface Design Show from 5-7 February welcomes interior designers and architects who come to the event to source new and inspiring products for commercial projects.

The award-winning studio is teaming up with partners Armourcoat, Formica Group, Johnson Tiles, Karndean Designflooring, Modulyss and Tektura to create a raw minimalist ‘gallery’ display of the hottest current and upcoming trends in surface design, with individual plinths showcasing the different materials to full effect.

Jim Biddulph, Projects & Materials Co-ordinator at Material Lab, says: “Surface Design is the only show for architects and designers which is dedicated to the latest innovative materials, and for us and our partners it’s a must-have opportunity to demonstrate the wealth of creativeness we have under one roof at Mat Lab, and our partners’ forward-thinking approach to modern surface design.

“This year we decided to make the materials the stars of our stand. We’re letting the products speak for themselves through unique solo displays allowing visitors to truly get up close and discover the latest, exciting surfaces available from our partners.

“It’s going to be a very tactile stand, we’re encouraging visitors to look, touch, feel – really immerse themselves, because there’s going to be plenty of interesting products to reveal. We’re hugely proud to represent our brands alongside what we promise will be some of the most inspiring materials from across the world.”

Visitors to Mat Lab’s stand 276 will also be encouraged to truly get involved with the display by taking a photo of themselves inside one of the crate installations. Visitors then take a picture of themselves to be shared via Instagram/Twitter - hash tag with #MatLabCrate – with the most innovative, creative entry winning a new iPad Mini.

ArmourFX modular panels have been specified at the Shard.  A 95-storey skyscraper in London, the Shard opened to the public on 1 February 2013. Standing 309.6 metres (1,016 ft) high, the Shard is the tallest building in the European Union.  The glass-clad pyramidal tower, designed by Renzo Piano, has 72 habitable floors, with a viewing gallery and open-air observation deck – the UK's highest – on the 72nd floor, at a height of 245 metres (804 ft).

Hawksmoor Air Street restaurant

Armourcoat polished plaster has been specified for the Hawksmoor Air Street restaurant in London.  Located on the first floor of Regent Street’s grand crescent, the restaurant and cocktail bar are inspired by the Piccadilly location - the heart of Art Deco London.

Nottingham-based interior architecture and design studio Macaulay Sinclair worked with owner Huw Gott, to create a glamorous interior paying homage to the classic Art Deco era.  As with all Hawksmoor locations, reclaimed materials have been used throughout to create a comfortable lived-in feel.

Entering the ground floor foyer the space is dominated by a sumptuous sweeping, elliptical marble staircase with black Armourcoat ‘SMG’ polished plaster walls, illuminated overhead by bespoke handcrafted chandeliers.  ‘SMG’ is a super luxury hand-applied wall finish with the appearance of a seamless high-gloss 'lacquer' effect, with no surface movement visible.

Creative use of stencils

$
0
0
Creative use of stencils can add a whole new dimension to Armourcoat surface finishes. Intricate, ornate designs or more geometric repeat patterns can be overlaid to create seamless wall effects, decorative borders or motifs with stunning effect. Background textured plaster finishes can form the background to highly polished Venetian plaster, providing a sophisticated and dramatic wall finish. ArmourColor architectural coatings can also be used in combination for a tough and durable finish option.

Vinyl stencils can also be used to create eye-catching company logos and more free-form wall branding. This can have the effect of intricately chiselled or carved stone for a permanent and enduring corporate look.

Creative Design Options
Whilst there are no fixed rules regarding which finishes should be used to create logo and stencil effects, certain combinations of finish give the best results, both in terms of the practicality of installation, and aesthetic merit.  In general we would recommend that the background layer is created in a textured plaster finish (Pitted, Travertine, Dragged) and the designs are finished in a finer and more polished finish such as Venetian plaster (Spatulata). Textured finishes contain larger marble granules and are therefore unsuitable for forming the raised part of a design. Spatulata, with micro-fine marble powder, provides a very clean and precise edge detail.

Colours and Lighting
The best looking stencil designs are often lit at an angle of incidence less than 15° so that a small drop shadow is created. The level of relief is determined by the choice of finish, but will generally be between 0.03”-0.10”.  To create a recessed stencil design set into the surface we can cut a ‘positive’ stencil. When the stencil is removed from the polished surface, the logo is recessed into the surface. A raised stencil design is also possible – using the reverse technique with a ‘negative’ stencil.  Choice of finish and color is important.  We can match most colors, using Pantone® swatches or similar, however we find the best results are achieved where the same tone is used but in slightly different shades.
